Harry Collier

My name is Harry and I am in my fifth year at Language Link.  Unlike many others who I have talked to during my time here, I did not become an intern in the fall of 2007 because I was a Russophile, had a degree related to Russia,or even fancied the idea of going into teaching.  I came to Russia for an entirely different reason.  I came to Russia because I was bored and wanted to find out what the next thing to do in life was.

At the time I was living in Las Vegas, NV, and while I thoroughly enjoyed waiting tables and going to Cashman Field to see the Las Vegas 51's play a double-header, I thought that I was missing out on something bigger.  One night while surfing the internet I ran across the Language Link website.  I will never forget that night.  It was 2:00am and I saw an advert that said, 'You can teach English in Russia' and immediately I thought to myself, "Yes, I can teach English in Russia."  I contacted Language Link in March of 2007 and in August was in Moscow training to be a teacher.

Looking back on the four wonderful years I have had in Moscow, I have many fond memories of great experiences and wonderful people.  I can easily rattle off a long list of 'remember the time that so-and-so did such-and-such', or 'what about the day that fill-in-the-blank happened', but really these are not the most important part of my experiences here; the greatest part has been the students.  We have laughed, cried, and seriously been confused over the years.

During my time in Russia I have taught a lot of English.  I have had students that, when we started, did not know the alphabet or the word 'hello', but are now advanced.  The feeling of hearing a student speak English well after studying with you is one of the greatest feelings in the world and is only surpassed by noticing a student make a Spiderman reference when doing a writing assignment or talking during class.

I am now in my third year as an ADOS in Moscow and I love it as well.  The chance to help and guide people learn the in's and out's of teaching and maybe discover their true calling as a teacher has been a truly rewarding experience that I wouldn't trade for the world.
